None of This is True by Lisa Jewell is a psychological thriller charting the relationship between two very different women. Alix Summer, a successful podcaster and Josie Fair, a disillusioned seamstress who’s lived the same life for thirty years.
“‘Hi!’ says Josie, her voice coming out higher than she’d imagined. ‘I’m your birthday twin!’”
It’s a chance meeting in a restaurant as both women celebrate their forty-fifth birthdays that kicks things off and then the pair meet again. This time Josie peaks Alix’s interest with a suggestion. Instead of talking with inspirational women about how they’ve changed their lives, why not chat with a seemingly ordinary woman as she dramatically overhauls her whole life.
“Now she’s heard that Josie has an extraordinary story to share, and even though Alix is slightly repelled by Josie’s intensity, she is also sickeningly drawn to the idea of finding out what it is.”
And that’s when the problems start.
A book club pick
None of This is True By Lisa Jewell was the first novel for our book club and what follows is a combined review from the group – but don’t worry, we’ve left out any spoilers.
Did we know who Lisa Jewell was?
Lisa Jewell is a multi-million copy bestselling author with more than twenty published books. Some of the group had never heard of her, others knew the name (like me) and some had almost read her full back list. But we did have one thing in common. All of us agreed this was definitely a page-turner, an unputdownable book that many of us devoured in a single sitting (I was one).
Remember to read the bonus chapter
However, there were very different interpretations and opinions about the characters and the storyline. The bonus chapter also threw up a few surprises – as in some people had totally missed reading it!
Many thought the story had no real characters you could empathise with. Both the main characters were flawed as were both their husbands. For a psychological thriller this is a great tactic. But some of the actions of Alix left certain group members having very little sympathy for her, as she continually ignored major alarm bells. However, the character herself does recognise this. There was also a particular storyline involving Josie’s husband which the book appeared to skim over.
The joys of a book club are the varying interpretations and reactions to the same story. Whereas some people enjoyed the final twist at the end, others were left frustrated and would have preferred a clear-cut finish.
None of this is true by Lisa Jewell – what was the verdict?
Overall, if you love a great read that keeps you hooked with multiple twists and turns then None of This is True by Lisa Jewell is certainly one for you. It offers a disturbing insight into highly dysfunctional families and the perils of going against your instincts. And I know that many of our group will be seeking out more stories by this highly talented writer. I certainly will. A fantastic read. Five stars.
